Storm Timeline: When and Where Severe Weather is Expected Near St. Louis
ST. LOUIS — A powerful storm system is set to move through the St. Louis area Friday evening, bringing the risk of damaging winds and fast-forming tornadoes. The National Weather Service has placed the region under a Level 4 out of 5 risk for severe weather, the highest threat level the area has seen in recent years.
As a result, a tornado watch has been issued from Central Missouri through St. Louis' Metro East region until 11 p.m. This means conditions are favorable for tornado development, though it does not guarantee one will form. If a watch is upgraded to a tornado warning, it means a tornado has been spotted or radar has detected rotation—at which point you should take cover immediately.
The most dangerous period is expected between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. in the metro area, with wind gusts reaching up to 90 mph in the strongest storms. Tornadoes could develop quickly with little warning, and areas hit by the storm may experience widespread damage.
Earlier in the day, strong, dry winds could also elevate fire danger, especially from midday through late afternoon, with gusts potentially reaching 40 to 55 mph.
Meteorologists urge residents to stay near shelter Friday night. "The metro could well be in the heart of the action," warns Chris Higgins.
