A powerful storm system that swept through the U.S. over the weekend caused deadly tornadoes, dust storms, and wildfires, leaving at least 39 people dead and destroying hundreds of homes and businesses.

As the storm moves into the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic, severe thunderstorms, hail, and strong winds continue to pose a threat. A tornado watch remains in effect for parts of North Carolina and Virginia, with wind gusts reaching up to 70 mph and hail the size of ping pong balls, according to the National Weather Service.

In Tylertown, Mississippi, entire neighborhoods were leveled, leaving six people dead and over 200 displaced, Governor Tate Reeves confirmed. Survivors recount harrowing escapes, including Hailey Hart and Steve Romero, who rode out the storm in their car as their home was torn apart.

What to Expect Next:

  • High winds from Florida to New Jersey
  • Heavy rain across New York and New England
  • More tornadoes possible in the storm’s path

Despite the devastation, meteorologists note that March often brings extreme weather fluctuations.
