Officials react to Grammy nominated singer Angie Stone’s death in Montgomery County crash

Montgomery County, Ala. – Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Angie Stone has died following a crash on Interstate 65 early Saturday morning, her manager, Deborah Champagne, confirmed to WSFA 12 News. She was 63.

According to Champagne, Stone was traveling after a performance and heading toward the CIAA basketball tournament in Baltimore when the crash occurred.

Initially, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) reported the accident took place just before 7 a.m., but later clarified that it happened at approximately 4:25 a.m. Authorities have also confirmed that eight other individuals were injured in the crash and transported to Baptist Medical Center South in Montgomery for treatment.

The Mobile Area Mardi Gras Association stated that Stone’s final performance took place Friday night at the 2025 Grand Marshal’s Ball in Mobile.

The crash, which involved a commercial vehicle, led to partial road closures on Interstate 65 for several hours. It occurred about two miles south of Hope Hull, blocking both the left northbound and left southbound lanes. ALEA Troopers reopened all lanes and cleared the scene by 11 a.m.

Montgomery Mayor Steven L. Reed released a statement following Stone’s passing, honoring her contributions to music and culture.

Authorities continue to investigate the crash, and no further details are available at this time.
