Trump and Maine’s Governor Clash at the White House Over Transgender Athletes

President Donald Trump and Maine Governor Janet Mills clashed at the White House on Friday during a meeting with the nation’s governors. The heated exchange occurred after Trump announced his administration’s intent to withhold federal funding from states that allow transgender athletes to compete in girls’ and women’s sports.

Mills, a Democrat, directly challenged the president, telling him, “We’ll see you in court.” In response, Trump confidently stated that he looked forward to the legal battle and predicted the move would mark the end of her political career.

Later that day, the U.S. Department of Education announced an investigation into the Maine Department of Education regarding its policies on transgender athletes.

The confrontation, which took place in the State Dining Room, marked a rare departure from the traditionally courteous exchanges between state leaders and the president. The tension had been building over the past 24 hours, as Mills and Trump had already exchanged public remarks on the issue. While addressing the gathered governors, Trump specifically called out Mills after previously criticizing her position in remarks to the Republican Governors Association.
