Gunman Who Killed Officer at Pennsylvania Hospital Had Prior Visit, Authorities Say

A gunman who took medical staff hostage, killed a police officer, and wounded five others at a hospital in south-central Pennsylvania on Saturday had visited the facility in the days leading up to the attack, authorities said.

The suspect, identified as 49-year-old Diogenes Archangel-Ortiz, was fatally shot during a confrontation with police, officials confirmed.

“At this time, we can confirm that Diogenes Archangel-Ortiz had prior contact with the ICU earlier in the week for a medical matter involving another individual,” York County District Attorney Tim Barker said during a Saturday news conference. He declined to share further details, citing privacy concerns and the ongoing investigation.

While the motive for the attack at UPMC Memorial Hospital in York remains unclear, Barker indicated the shooting appeared to be a deliberate act targeting the ICU.

“If someone arrives at a hospital armed with a firearm and zip ties, immediately heads to a specific area, and carries out such actions, it is clear this was targeted,” Barker said.
