Scattered Pills Found Near Body of Hackman’s Wife as Inquiry Continues

Authorities in Santa Fe County, N.M., are investigating the deaths of actor Gene Hackman, his wife, and one of their dogs, who were found inside their home.

A 911 caller reported seeing a body on the floor and urged emergency services to respond urgently.

Hackman, 94, was discovered deceased in the mudroom of their New Mexico residence, while his wife, Betsy Arakawa, was found on the bathroom floor, according to a search warrant affidavit. Near her body, investigators found an open prescription bottle and scattered pills on a counter.

A deceased German shepherd was located 10 to 15 feet away in a closet. Authorities ruled out a gas leak or carbon monoxide poisoning, as no evidence was detected by the Fire Department. Maintenance workers who discovered the couple stated they had not had contact with them for two weeks.

The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office reported Thursday that “there were no apparent signs of foul play.”

Autopsies conducted the same day revealed no immediate external trauma. Carbon monoxide and toxicology tests were ordered, though results are still pending, leaving the causes of death undetermined.

Detective Roy Arndt’s affidavit stated that Arakawa was found lying on her side near a space heater. A deputy on the scene speculated that the heater might have fallen with her. Her body exhibited signs of decomposition and “mummification” in the hands and feet.

Two other dogs were found alive on the property. Hackman’s body was discovered in gray sweatpants, a blue long-sleeve shirt, brown slippers, and with a cane beside him. A deputy noted that it appeared he had "suddenly fallen."

The couple was found after a maintenance worker, concerned that no one answered the door, requested a security check. Upon seeing unresponsive bodies through a window, security officers called 911. Deputies arrived and confirmed both were deceased.
