Maine Governor and Trump Clash Over Trans Rights
Governor Janet Mills of Maine has vowed to take legal action after President Trump threatened to withhold federal funding unless the state complies with his executive order banning transgender athletes from women’s sports.
During a public exchange, Trump called out Mills, asking if Maine would enforce the order.
“The NCAA has complied immediately, by the way. That’s good. But I understand Maine — is Maine here? The governor of Maine.”
“Yeah, I’m here,” Mills responded.
“Are you not going to comply with it?” Trump pressed.
“I’m complying with state and federal laws,” she said.
“Well, we are the federal law. You better do it, because you’re not going to get any federal funding at all if you don’t,” Trump warned. “And by the way, your population—even though it’s somewhat liberal, although I did very well there—doesn’t want men playing in women’s sports. So you better comply, or you’re not getting any federal funding.”
Mills’ response was swift: “See you in court.”
Trump doubled down, welcoming the legal battle: “Good, I’ll see you in court. I look forward to that. That should be a real easy one.”
The clash sets the stage for a potential legal showdown over transgender rights and federal authority.
