Hunter Schafer Says Passport Now Lists Her as Male Due to Trump’s Executive Order

 Topline
Hunter Schafer, the transgender actress best known for her role in HBO’s Euphoria, shared in a TikTok video that her recently renewed passport incorrectly lists her sex as male. She believes the change is a result of President Donald Trump’s executive order mandating that gender on government documents must reflect sex assigned at birth. Key Facts Schafer applied for a passport renewal after her previous one was stolen. Despite selecting "female" on the application, her new passport was issued with "male" as her sex marker. She noted that all her previous identification

 documents,
including passports and driver’s licenses, correctly listed her as female. The Bureau of Consular Affairs, which issues U.S. passports, states on its website that passports will only include “M” or “F” markers that align with a person’s biological sex at birth. The agency no longer offers the “X” marker for nonbinary individuals, following Trump’s executive order. Schafer criticized the Trump administration, stating, “I’m never going to stop being trans, and a letter on a passport can’t change that.” She emphasized that she wasn’t seeking sympathy but wanted to highlight how the policy impacts other transgender women. Trump’s Executive Order on Gender On his first day back in office, Trump signed an executive order titled “Defending Women from Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal

 Government.”
The order mandates that all federal agencies recognize only two sexes—male and female—based on birth records. The policy requires passports and other government-issued IDs to reflect sex assigned at birth. It also prohibits federal funding for what the order calls “gender ideology,” rejecting the concept that gender identity exists beyond biological sex. Trump has enacted several policies affecting transgender individuals, including reinstating a ban on transgender people serving in the military and barring transgender women from competing in women’s sports.

 Crucial Quote
“I don’t give a f— that they put an ‘M’ on my passport. It doesn’t change anything about me or my transness. However, it does make life a little harder,” Schafer said, noting she will likely have to disclose her transgender identity to border officials when traveling. Legal Challenges The executive order has already faced legal pushback. Earlier this month, a group of transgender plaintiffs—represented by the American Civil Liberties Union—filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Boston. The lawsuit argues that the policy discriminates based on sex and transgender status and violates First Amendment rights to free speech and expression.
