Actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, were discovered dead in their New Mexico home on Wednesday, along with their dog, under circumstances that authorities deemed “suspicious enough” to warrant a thorough investigation.

The cause of death remains unknown. Preliminary autopsy results revealed no external trauma, and authorities reported no immediate signs of foul play, carbon monoxide poisoning, or a gas leak.

The couple’s bodies were found in separate rooms, with scattered pills discovered near Arakawa, according to law enforcement.

Hackman, 95, was a celebrated Oscar-winning actor known for iconic roles in The French Connection, Hoosiers, Unforgiven, and The Firm. Arakawa, who was nearly 30 years younger than Hackman, was a classical pianist

Their bodies were discovered by maintenance workers just before 2 p.m. local time Wednesday, according to a sheriff’s office affidavit obtained by CNN affiliate KOAT.

In a 911 call, a caller said they could not enter the home but saw two unconscious people through a window.

"No, dude, they’re not moving. Just send somebody out here really quick," the caller urged.

Responding officers found Arakawa’s body on the bathroom floor near an orange prescription pill bottle, with scattered pills nearby. The affidavit noted that her body showed signs of decomposition, including bloating in the face and mummification in the hands and feet.

Hackman’s body was found near the kitchen in a similar condition. A cane and sunglasses were beside him, and authorities suspect he had suddenly fallen.

A deceased German shepherd was initially reported to be in a closet but was later clarified to have been found in a crate inside the bathroom. Two other dogs were found alive on the property.

Sheriff Adan Mendoza stated that the couple had likely been deceased for some time. Maintenance workers told police they had not been in contact with the homeowners for two weeks.
